Frequently Asked Questions

What are Big Ass Shims™?

Big Ass Shims™ are oversized, flat, non-wedge PVC shims designed to make installations faster, easier, and more precise than traditional wood or composite wedge shims.

What are they made from?

Big Ass Shims™ are made from durable 0.6 density expanded PVC, offering excellent rigidity, moisture resistance, and jobsite versatility.

Where are Big Ass Shims™ made?

Proudly Made in America 🇺🇸

Why are they better than traditional wedge shims?

Traditional wedge shims are tapered, short, and often split or crack. Big Ass Shims™ are flat and oversized, giving you:

✅ Faster installs
✅ More coverage
✅ Better support across wider areas
✅ Easier stacking for exact thicknesses
✅ No shimming from both sides in many applications

What size are they?

Each Big Ass Shim™ measures:

48" long x 1.5" wide

That’s far more usable material than standard small shims.

What thicknesses do you offer?

Standard sizes include:

🟨 Yellow = 1/8"
🟩 Green = 3/16"
🟥 Red = 1/4"
🟦 Blue = 1/2"

Use them individually or stack combinations for custom thicknesses.

Can I cut them?

Yes.

Big Ass Shims™ are easy to:

✅ Score with a utility knife
✅ Snap to length
✅ Trim as needed

Tip: For 1/2" blue shims, score both sides before snapping for the cleanest break.

Can I screw, nail, or staple through them?

Yes.

They can be fastened with:

✅ Screws
✅ Brad nails
✅ Finish nails
✅ Crown staples

Pro Tip: Adjust the depth setting on your nailer or stapler when switching between different shim thicknesses to ensure proper fastening and holding power.

Always choose the correct fastener length so it fully penetrates the framing member.

Are they structural?

No.

Big Ass Shims™ are designed for:

✅ Alignment
✅ Leveling
✅ Spacing
✅ Installation support

They are not intended as primary structural load-bearing components.

Can they be used outdoors?

Yes.

Expanded PVC is moisture-resistant and suitable for many indoor and outdoor applications.

What are common uses?

✅ Walls, floors & ceilings
✅ Doors & windows
✅ Cabinets
✅ Tub & shower surrounds
✅ Drywall returns
✅ Exterior siding & trim
✅ Remodel leveling work
✅ Countless other projects

How much material is in a Contractor Pack?

A standard Contractor Pack includes:

✅ 20 total shims
(5 of each thickness)

That equals approximately:

80 linear feet of shimming material

Do you sell refill packs?

Yes. We offer single-size refill packs so you can stock up on the sizes you use most.

Will they split or crack like wood and composite shims?

No.

Big Ass Shims™ are designed to resist the splitting and cracking commonly experienced with wood or brittle composite shims during normal fastening.

Are they good for long runs?

Absolutely.

Their 48" length makes them ideal for flattening walls, leveling long surfaces, and bridging areas where short shims are inefficient.

Do contractors really use these?

Yes.

Hundreds of contractors across the country use Big Ass Shims™ every day to save time and improve installs.
